At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes broke out when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is seen as the central command of a major illegal networks.

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Locals have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, along with numerous weapons.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
