The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the producers of Tylenol, alleging the corporations concealed alleged dangers that the medication posed to children's cognitive development.

The court filing arrives a month after Donald Trump advocated an unproven link between consuming acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - throughout gestation and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

Paxton is suing J&J, which previously sold the medication, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he claimed they "betrayed America by gaining financially from pain and promoting medication ignoring the dangers."

The manufacturer states there is no credible evidence connecting Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These manufacturers misled for generations, intentionally threatening countless individuals to boost earnings," the attorney general, from the Republican party, stated.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the reliability of paracetamol and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of American women and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the relevant science and there is insufficient valid information that shows a verified association between taking acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups acting on behalf of medical professionals and health professionals concur.

ACOG has declared acetaminophen - the key substance in acetaminophen - is among limited choices for expectant mothers to treat discomfort and fever, which can present significant medical dangers if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of research on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation results in neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the organization said.

The lawsuit mentions latest statements from the former administration in asserting the medication is allegedly unsafe.

Recently, Trump generated worry from health experts when he instructed pregnant women to "struggle intensely" not to use acetaminophen when ill.

The US Food and Drug Administration then released a statement that doctors should contemplate reducing the consumption of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has not been proven.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who manages the FDA, had vowed in spring to undertake "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the source of autism in a short period.

But specialists warned that identifying a sole reason of autism - thought by researchers to be the result of a complicated interplay of inherited and surrounding conditions - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a category of permanent neurological difference and disability that influences how persons encounter and interact with the surroundings, and is identified using physician assessments.

In his court filing, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is seeking the Senate - claims the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "deliberately disregarded and attempted to silence the research" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the firms "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts acetaminophen is secure for expectant mothers.

This legal action mirrors the grievances of a assembly of parents of minors with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the producers of acetaminophen in 2022.

A federal judge dismissed the case, saying investigations from the parents' expert witnesses was inconclusive.
