Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
One snub proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to understand that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the tactical structures and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.
Tuchel desires Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it in the right way. Individual quality is important but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched England book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent shine as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard the coach discuss appreciating the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for his club against their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Bellingham just has the edge. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. Everyone need to support him and create an environment which he can use this edge towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. He has not played for the national team since March and has struggled to hit the heights this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory against the German side this week.
The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick another youngster once he overcomes a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”
Tuchel agreed there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to representing Man City in a specific system, with a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”
Tuchel discussed Bellingham bursting through for easy finishes and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 against Serbia or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are other options if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where eventually it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of the player under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. It will make a powerful England team into an more effective one.
